All graduate students at Selwyn may use the common room, aka the MCR, at any time; the room is open 24/7 all year round. They are also entitled to bring a reasonable number of accompanied guests from within the University and outside. The room is located in Cripps Court, on the ground floor of staircase K/J. Access to the MCR is granted by your MCR key – every MCR member can get their key at the Porters' Lodge at the start of their residence in Selwyn. The MCR premises consist of a large common room with sofas, a widescreen TV, a kitchenette, books and board games; another smaller room with a TV, consoles and a pool table, is located opposite the main room.
Kitchen
A coffee-machine is provided in the MCR kitchen. Crockery and cutlery are for everyone to borrow but it is the users' responsibility to wash up after themselves. Please notify your Common Room Officer (or, in the absence of said officer, anyone in the committee) if the supplies are running low.
TV
There is a smart TV in the main MCR room. There is also a Blu-ray/DVD player and the MCR owns a wide range of films. These are kept on the shelves next to the entrance. You can also borrow DVDs from the College Library. There is a second TV in the smaller MCR room. A couple consoles and games are available.
Games and Books
The MCR has a collection of board games available for everyone to play. A small selection of fiction and reference books are available for you to borrow.
Pool Table
The pool table is a staple at most MCR events and is very popular. This is free to play and is located in the smaller MCR room.
Table Football
The table football table is another popular MCR pasttime. Free to play and found in the smaller MCR room.
Welfare
Condoms, lube, and pregnancy test are available for free in the MCR. The stock is regularly refilled by our Welfare Officer(s). Tampons are also available for free in the toilet adjacent to the MCR.
Notice Boards
Please feel free to make use of the notice boards in the MCR for posters, adverts etc. They are there for everyone to use. We also have a designated welfare section of one of the notice boards managed by the college nurse and the MCR welfare officer.
Security and Cleanliness
It is critical to ensure that the main door closes and locks behind you when you leave. There is no official system for cleaning up the room, so please keep the MCR tidy. Leaving a mess behind after you is unfair to the cleaner and everybody else who wants to use the room. Please wash up your mugs, glasses, teapots, plates or the coffee machine if you use anything from the kitchen.
Make it yours
The MCR is meant to be attractive to the students who use it. If you have any suggestions about what could be improved or purchased (streaming subscription, biscuit suggestion, more board games, etc.), please get in touch with the Common Room Officer (in their absence, contact anyone else from the committee).
